Feeding the Hungry Teen

I need help, folks!

The not-quite 13-year-old is adding a sport to his weekly activities. Everyday, he'll have cross country practice before school. This is in addition to his club soccer practices and three x a week gym at school. Right now he's working out with a ninth grade soccer team, so he's added a few extra soccer practices a week, although we'll probably drop those once school starts next Monday.

We went to the pediatrician yesterday, and he'd gained 3.5 inches and 16 pounds over the last year. At 5 foot 5 inches and 117 pounds, he's thin for his size, but not excessively so. And she said, this is the beginning--he probably will grow at that rate for the next few years. All that growth and all that activity means a lot of calories!

So, how do I keep him from starving at school so he can concentrate? My plan is to feed him a light breakfast at home and send something for him to eat after running but before school starts in the morning. Runs for Chocolate, a letterboxing friend and middle school xcountry coach, suggests extra food in the lunch. Any suggestions for what to send for second breakfast and elevensies? What did you find filled them up and kept them going?

The pediatrician said as long as he ate his 5-7 servings of fruit and vegetables, it would be fine to load him up with protein and carbs for the rest of his calories.

What worked well for your kid or you when you were this voracious ravenous being we call a teenage boy?
